“It’s been a heck of a week… and it’s ONLY Tuesday!” Does this sound familiar?  It does to me…. I find myself saying this far more than I should.

Most of us caretakers take on more than humanly possible some days. We just hold our arms out and ask for more to be piled on… because we can “handle it”.  Until we are so stressed out, exhausted or even become physically ill from not taking care of ourselves.

Being a mother of two, a wife, a coach, a competitor and with everything else that life throws my way, I never could find the time to relax. There is always something that needs to be done.  Well, that’s exactly it…. there will always be something that needs doing… it will wait for you. I will admit that I am a stubborn Latina but have finally realized that I cannot save the world and if I want to take good care of the ones I love, I must take care of myself first!

Women usually feel that doing for others is rewarding. I have learned however, that doing for you is rewarding to others.

Here are some ways I sneak in some “me” time.

Tea Time….
I love to curl up on my couch and enjoy a hot cup of tea after everyone in my house has gone to bed. It relaxes me and I’m able to unwind before going to sleep.

Journal….
Studies have shown that spending time writing your thoughts down will drastically reduce stress and allows you to feel more in control of your life.

Music….
There are days when I want to “unplug” everything that makes noise and enjoy the silence as it is so soothing. BUT there are other days that I will crank up the stereo and dance around my entire house which leaves me feeling exhilarated and energized.

Breath of Fresh Air…
Often times I wake up before my family and enjoy a brisk morning walk to start off my day.  The morning air is so refreshing and helps me clear my thoughts and prepare for what lies ahead.

Quick Zzzz’s….
I try my best to sneak in a 20 minute power nap just before my children come home from school. It helps me recharge and I feel ready to take on new challenges. Studies have shown that 20-30 minute naps are just the right amount of time to de-stress….. napping too much longer can leave you feeling groggy.

Tub Time….
A warm bath is one of my favorite ways to de-stress.  Make it even more serene and light some candles.

Slow Down….
My favorite “me” time ironically is the time I spend with my children. Leaving work and schedules behind….time spent just enjoying their company and realizing truly what really matters in life.

My wish is that you will be able to recognize when it’s time for you to “Take 10” and in doing so you and your family will reap the benefits.
